UK remains top destination for European jobseekers

According to new analysis by job site, Indeed, the UK remains the first choice for Europeans looking for work abroad.

However, that lead is rapidly narrowing with Germany, Ireland and Luxembourg increasing in popularity.

Conversely, Britons remain the least likely to look for work in another European country, even though Brexit has driven a 15% increase in the number of those that do.

In the months following the Brexit referendum, and while there has been an exodus of EU workers from the UK, the UK remains the most popular choice for European workers by a third.

However, this 31.8% share of EU15 cross-border job searches is down on the same 2015 figure by almost 15%.

Indeed’s analysis indicates that job search is shifting from the UK to the second most popular country, Germany. Ireland’s popularity also rose by 33% and Luxembourg’s by more than half (56%).

The findings reflect official migration statistics that show the number of EU citizens moving to Britain fell by 19% in the year after Brexit. In the same period, the number of EU citizens leaving Britain rose by 29% to 123,000.

And while British job seekers have always been reticent about working across the EU, preferring instead English speaking countries such as the US, Canada and Australia, there has been a 15% increase in those undertaking EU job searches.

The trend is also flipping for those traditionally moving from Ireland to the UK to work, with Ireland’s booming jobs market creating a 16.5% fall in those Irish job seekers looking to Britain for their next move. Meanwhile, in Poland, with 1 million citizens already living in the UK, the number of job seekers looking for work in the UK fell by 11.4%.
