The top 15 best-paying jobs for travel fans

For most of us, a summer holiday involves paying to travel and get away from work.

But a select few people are lucky enough to be paid to travel for work. It’s an intoxicating idea that the rest of us may ponder after a day at the beach, only to drop it when the holiday ends and we have to go back to work.

But what if you really could combine work and wanderlust? Research by the world’s biggest job site Indeed has revealed that it is possible to combine air miles, adventure and earning potential.

It analysed the average salaries of a range of jobs that involve frequent travel to identify the top 15 cross-border careers.

Management consultants sit at the top of the ranking, enjoying an average salary of £55,236 while spending up to 80% of their working time on the move. Meanwhile freelance designers - who may spend all their working time travelling - bring home an average of £45,754 a year.

Although the list includes some careers you’d expect to involve travel - such as airline pilot, travel writer and flight attendant - there are some welcome wanderlust surprises. The research reveals that auditors can earn an average of £34,062 a year while spending up to 15% of their working time travelling.

Bill Richards, UK Managing Director at Indeed, commented: “Being paid to travel need not be a fantasy. For people with itchy feet and the desire to work among other cultures, jobs that require lots of travel can be hugely satisfying.

“They’re not for everyone of course. A career spent on the road can be very tough for those with family and commitments, and living out of a suitcase for months can take the shine off travel for anyone.

“But loving what we do helps us thrive as an individual and achieve great things as a professional. If you have a passion for travelling and can combine it with a job you enjoy, the salary will be only half the reward.”

Indeed Salaries is a tool that provides jobseekers and businesses with unprecedented insight into salary data from its global database, comprising over 300 million salary data points and growing. The tool uses actual data and estimates from employees, users and past and present job advertisements to calculate an average for each job listing by region on a weekly basis.
