Ri5 Profile: Vanessa Soames

Vanessa Soames, Graduate Recruitment Director at Police Now, talks to Ri5 about how she got into the industry, what she’s been doing recently and also some highlights in between

How did you first get into the industry?

I started in the industry working in Student recruitment at the professional body ACCA. My first role was going out on campus, updating the website and making updatable CD roms, we have moved on significantly from those times but I loved how, in recruitment marketing, you could be innovative and use the latest technology. I left the industry for four years and had a spurt in PR and working for an airline but I missed the youth market so came back. I’ve spent nearly 10 years at KPMG, freelancing and for the last 19 months at Police Now as Graduate Recruitment Director.

Would you do the same again?

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

Each day you should try your best - as long as you have tried your best, you should stop worrying.

And what piece of advice would you give somebody starting out in the sector?

Try new things, have good attention to detail, trust your gut and remember it’s a team effort – both internally and with your suppliers.

What’s your favourite recruitment ad?

I like adverts that have humour and are topical. One that always sticks in my mind is Yodel’s in 2016 – "the search for drivers is on", when Chris Evans was announced as the new presenter on Top Gear.

And what’s your favourite non-recruitment ad?

At the moment the new google phone pixel2 ad as it has all the scenarios we witness every day so it makes me laugh.

What items do you never leave home without?

My headphones – I can’t bear the tube without them

What’s your biggest achievement – career or otherwise?

I have been fortunate enough to work with some amazing inspiring managers in my career who have given me autonomy to try new things and be innovative. Throughout I’ve had teams who have trusted me to take them out of their comfort zone and try new things – this has never been more so than at Police Now when we implemented a new brand, changed the recruitment process and scaled up to recruit for 19 forces and then train 229 people to be Neighbourhood police officers in less than a year. The culmination is winning 16 awards in 2017, the pinnacle of which is the Personnel Today award for best graduate scheme. This is the result of many people’s hard work and passion to do things differently. That result is my biggest achievement especially as within the organisation none of us have worked together for more than 18 months.

What is your ideal holiday?

Somewhere warm, a really nice hotel, things to visit and a swimming pool

Three words to describe yourself?

Determined, passionate and caring
