Ri5 Profile: Simon Wright

Simon is Director at CareersinAudit.com, CareersinRisk.com, CareersinCyber.com, CareersinCyberSecurity.co.uk and CareersinCompliance.co.uk. Here we get to know him a little bit better

How did you first get into the industry?

I studied Marketing at university as I always wanted to get into advertising. I got into the online recruitment industry by chance as the first role I took after studying was for Marketing Executive at a recruitment company with offices across West London, managing the group’s advertising and media relations.

Since then, I’ve managed to work on the agency side, for both large and smaller recruitment firms, RPOs and of course job boards.

Would you do the same again?

Absolutely!  Having been in the industry for more than 16 years and having worked in many different areas I wouldn’t change this path – it’s been extremely interesting and rewarding.

Technological changes have had a huge impact within the recruitment advertising and online media industries and it is continually evolving at quite a pace.  The industry has changed so much since I first started, which means there is no standing still.  I am constantly looking at ways we can improve the processes for our candidates and clients, which includes enhancing our software, expanding into new markets and locations, building partnerships with developers and tech firms across the world, keeping uptodate and compliant with new regulations and creating useful and educational content on our sites.

What would you do if you didn’t do this?

I would be running a successful vineyard somewhere in Europe. That said I’m hoping one day I get the opportunity to do this as well.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

Never stand still and be complacent.  One boss once advised me never to stay in my comfort zone – and never be afraid to push ahead with new ideas or initiatives. I have lived by this early advice and believe this has had a huge impact on my career and the success of the companies I have grown and developed.

And what piece of advice would you give somebody starting out in the sector?

Work hard and enjoy yourself. Both together will ensure you have a successful and rewarding career in this industry

What’s your favourite recruitment ad?

I love the Adele parody video from Grad Touch – a great way to get the message across to graduates with a humorous angle, whilst displaying some fine acting skills within the job board team.

And what’s your favourite non-recruitment ad?

The Budweiser ‘Whassup’ TV ad from the late 90s. Love it or hate it, I can’t think of many other ads that had almost everybody using the catchphrase at the time, from playgrounds to the office, and many people still do almost 20 years later.

You’re entertaining industry contacts. Where do you take them, and why?

The typical places would be the likes of Gaucho and Hawksmoor for the more carnivorous clients, but a firm favourite from a few years back was taking a group of recruiters and agency account managers to the Hong Kong Sevens for a weekend. What could possibly go wrong?!

What are you reading at the moment?

I’m currently reading Naked and Marooned by Ed Stafford. Choosing to be stranded on a deserted island with no food, water or clothes for two months and being forced to eat sea snails to survive – he’s a modern-day hero.

And what are you listening to?

Eric Prydz, Opus

What is your favourite film?

Inception.  I must have watched that film five times now. (And the rest! I’ve probably watched it about 50 times!) Delving into dreams and how the mind works has always interested me. Christopher Nolan is a great director

Something or someone for Room 101?

Pokemon (I have two small children who have recently started school - this is all I hear about!!)

What item do you never leave home without?

Other than the obvious contraptions with emails on them, I’d say it’s got to be my Fitbit. Every day/week I am invited to step-count challenges by friends and colleagues, so it’s not an option to leave this behind.

What’s your biggest achievement – career or otherwise?

It would have to be building and growing CareersinAudit.com into a global brand and specialist job board group over the past 12 years and achieving the most industry award wins of any niche job board.

What is your ideal holiday?

Snow, mountains and skiing. Throw in a festival or two = perfect.

Three words to describe yourself?

Energetic, passionate, dedicated.

What single fact would surprise people the most about you?

I’m a qualified skydiver.
