Ri5 Profile: Kevin McEwan

‘Are you Experienced’ was the debut studio album of Jimi Hendrix. Kevin is not Jimi, as much as he’d like to be, but he is Group Agency Director at the BigChoice Group, has been with the business for just over two years and has a background in UK and International education and recruitment marketing, previously working for Educate, The Student Room and Student Beans – so in essence, he is experienced.

How did you first get into the industry?

My first job in Education Recruitment was with eMedia, which at the time was the eMarketing division of Reed Business Information. It wasn’t until I joined Educate with Guy Griffith, Dan Beynon and Richard Badley that I covered both Education Recruitment and Graduate Recruitment. That was where I received a ‘proper’ induction to it all.

Would you do the same again?

I would. I think helping Universities and Graduate Employers engage with young people is an exciting place to be.  Being part of a young person’s decision making process and finding interesting ways to get the correct information into the hands of the most savvy consumers on the planet is a challenging and highly rewarding thing to do.

What would you do if you didn’t do this?

I would be Jimi Hendrix. If you can’t do ‘this’, ALWAYS be Jimi Hendrix!

Who are your favourite people from the industry?

There are many, but I’ll have to say Gerry Nixon. I have worked with Gerry at Educate, The Student Room and now again at the BigChoice Group with him running our Consumer Division. Not too many people understand the business we are in like Gerry!  (Gerry, you owe me £50...)

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

‘Know your stuff and always be honest’.

It sounds so simple, yet you’ll be surprised how many people you meet that don’t and aren’t.

And what piece of advice would you give somebody starting out in the sector?

On the media side, I would say choose your employer well. Product and audience is everything.

You’re entertaining industry contacts. Where do you take them, and why?

Pierre Victoire on Dean Street. My wife is French and her Grandmother is arguably the biggest food-snob on the planet and she loves it there!

What are you reading at the moment?

God's Bankers: A History of Money and Power at the Vatican by Gerald Posner- it is an insane read thus far.

And what are you listening to?

The National- Sleep Well Beast and Frightened Rabbit- Midnight Organ Fight... I’m an Indie-Geek!

Which five guests would you invite to your ideal dinner party?

Comedian Stewart Lee, Martial Artist Bruce Lee, Guitarist Albert Lee, 90’s footballer Jason ‘pineapple on his head’ Lee...

And a bloke I know from the pub called Lee... I’ve known him 10 years and don’t know his surname... Maybe it’s ‘Lee’?

Something or someone for Room 101?

Lateness - I cannot tell you how much it winds me up.

What’s your biggest achievement – career or otherwise?

Helping to build the team of absolute legends we have at the BigChoice Group. Every single person that works for us is super smart, highly driven and an expert at what they do.

Who’s your biggest hero, and why?

My wife. Besides just being an awesome person, excellent wife and superb mother, she is also a psychologist for the NHS and does incredible work with vulnerable people.

What is your ideal holiday?

We have a holiday home in Rayol Canadel in the South of France. Local wine and cheese, an afternoon sat on the veranda without a care in the world! Bliss!

Three words to describe yourself?

Much. Too. Much (for some people!)

Your best and worst habits?

BEST - Burping... I’m really good at it
WORST - Burping... I’m really good at it

What’s your guilty pleasure?

No pleasure should be guilty - If you enjoy something, embrace it! Sod what anyone else thinks!

What single fact would surprise people the most about you?

I’m terrified of cotton buds. I have an unhealthy, violent phobia of them.
