Ri5 profile: Kelly Rose

Kelly Rose is sales manager for New Scientist at RBI Recruitment Media. She joined RBI in September 2010 and has worked on the New Scientist brand for four years; she has worked with agencies, consultancies and direct customers across Europe and was recently promoted to sales manager for one of RBI’s flagship brands.

And you might also recognise Kelly as the trophy girl from this year’s RAD Awards…

How did you first get into the sector?

Before joining RBI, my experience was in customer service across a range of sectors, but for the longest time in Education. After returning from two months’ travelling around South East Asia and Indonesia, I was looking for a client-focused role and RBI was recommended to me by a consultant.

What was your first recruitment-related job?

I joined RBI as a telesales executive and worked on Optician for three months before moving to New Scientist. The optical industry is just as exciting but science stole my heart!

Accident or design?

Accident! I don’t think anyone chooses recruitment advertising - or do they?!

Would you do the same again?

Yes! I am very lucky to work with some very talented and very lovely people - colleagues, agencies and direct customers included.

What would you do if you didn’t do this?

Be a mystery shopper in the hotel / holiday industry!

Proudest achievements?

Visiting clients in remote places all over Europe and always managing to find my way home - my geography isn’t so good!

On a personal level, buying my house! I was only 24 and it took some serious discipline and hard work so it was a big moment for me.

Top professional influence?

Lucinda Quigley (group sales manager at RBI) managed me in the early stages of my RBI career and played a big part in my development. (I’m going to be branded a brown nose for that comment!)

Why we love social media?

Communicating and interacting with people that we wouldn’t otherwise.

Why we hate social media?

Too many people that don’t do it well.

Favourite recruitment ad?

I love the ‘Make your move with RB’ advert that was highly commended in the audio visual award category at the RADs this year. It’s cheeky, unique and very clever.

Favourite non-recruitment ad?

The Christmas 2014 Mulberry advert made me chuckle. ‘Win at Christmas’ is such a great concept, especially if it encourages someone to buy me a Mulberry bag.

Favourite book?

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Favourite restaurant for:

Business: The private dining I hosted at the Wolesley was fantastic; good food and good company.
Enjoying with friends: Any Mexican that serves strawberry margaritas will do.
Romance: Anywhere on a beach as the sun sets.
Eating: The Hawksmoor - simple food done well, and the peanut butter shortbread is too good!

Something or someone for Room 101?

People that leave empty food packaging out. I have a couple of serial offenders in my team and there’s nothing more disappointing than picking up a Dairy Milk bar to realise it’s just an empty wrapper!

Most looking forward to?

The weekend!

Favourite sport (participant)?

Netball is my new thing! I’ve never really been into sports as such but we recently formed an RBI netball team and joined an amateur league.

Despite my initial reluctance, this has quickly become the highlight of my week and having learnt the basics, my competitive streak is shining through – despite my footwork still being a bit dodgy and the fact we’ve yet to win a game…

Favourite sport (spectator)?

If I had to choose, it would probably be rugby. I don’t really understand the rules but it looks like great fun!

Holiday – sun/sea, ski, safari, or culture?

I like to fit in one of each throughout the year if I can. Start the year with a ski trip, go for some sun and sea in the middle and end with an adventure. My favourite place is Vietnam because it combines it all; nice beaches, beautiful scenery and bundles of culture.

Guilty pleasure?

Other than holidays, boxset marathons (on the sofa with the curtains closed)!

What single fact would surprise people the most about you?

People are always surprised to hear that I love camping. I don’t really understand why though!
