Keith Pilling, Chief Operating Officer, Penna.  Needs no further introduction.

How did you first get into the industry?

I always wanted to be a racing driver but a lack of talent meant the recruitment industry was my last and only option….so I joined a company called Austin Knight (long since gone) as a graduate trainee

Would you do the same again?

No, I’d be a racing driver

What would you do if you didn’t do this?

You know what I’m going to say……

Who are your favourite people from the industry?

Too many to name check so I’ll just remind us all of the dear departed Bob Townes and Ed Larder, two great friends and legends of our industry.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

Run towards the problem

And what piece of advice would you give somebody starting out in the sector?

A storyteller is nothing without a listener

You’re entertaining industry contacts. Where do you take them, and why?

The cocktail club beneath the Breakfast Club at London Bridge….because it’s funny.

What are you reading at the moment?

The Rub of Time – Martin Amis

And what are you listening to?

Any old shite on Spotify to be honest. Premium…obviously.

Which five guests would you invite to your ideal dinner party?  

Gordon Ramsay, Michel Bras, Paul Bocuse, Pierre Gagnaire…….. and Angelina Jolie

What are your top three films?

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, For a few Dollars More, A Fistful of Dollars

Something or someone for Room 101?

Chief Excitement Officer/Spiritual Leader/Growth Hacker/Innovation Sherpa/Executive Sensei/Digital Prophet/Galactic Viceroy of Research ……all into Room 101….. and rebranded as Muppets

What items do you never leave home without?

My St Christopher talisman……superstitious bollocks but it was a present from my grandad

What’s your biggest achievement – career or otherwise?

Getting to 52 and not being fired…yet

Who’s your biggest hero, and why?

Peter Lorimer, attacking midfielder for Leeds United in the 70s and 80s. A passionate, hard player.

What is your ideal holiday?

Anywhere with the right people

Your best and worst habits?

I take work way too seriously

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Canal boating….yes really

What has been your worst/most boring job you’ve ever had?

Working for Julie Towers. I must have been really bad in a previous life….answer 14 may now have to be revisited…

What single fact would surprise people the most about you?

That I have agreed to do this.
