Ri5 Profile: Karen Austen

After spending nearly 16 years within the recruitment industry, Karen has recently joined Mumsnet to head up their jobs board proposition and promote family friendly employers

How did you first get into the industry?

After spending a few years on the HR Helpdesk at Citigroup, I fell into a local role with a small jobs board called TopDogjobs in 2002 and spent 4 happy years with them before moving on to Monster, reed.co.uk, Sonru and now Mumsnet Jobs.

Would you do the same again?

Absolutely, and particularly now that I’m able to promote flexible working and gender diversity which has become a personal mission since returning to the workplace after maternity leave. I still have very fond memories of each role, met lots of great people and they’ve all shaped me in some way or another.

What would you do if you didn’t do this?

As a child I was adamant that I’d be a teacher or a journalist which might explain why I’m so fastidious about spelling and grammar!

What’s your favourite recruitment ad?

This one’s easy; anything from the RAF.

And what’s your favourite non-recruitment ad?

A Sony Bravia TV ad’ from the mid 2000’s, where 250k bouncy balls were launched down the hilly streets of San Francisco.

You’re entertaining industry contacts. Where do you take them, and why?

I’m a sucker for Gaucho if the contact is a meat eater, humita anyone? Bob Bob Ricard is at the very top of the list of places to try next!

What are you reading at the moment?

“Tsunami Kids: Our Journey from Survival to Success” but I’ve only just started it this morning so can’t comment any further yet.

And what are you listening to?

My iTunes account is an eclectic list that includes pop, rock, indie, soul and much more besides, but this morning’s commute was to the tune of “Mumford and Sons” which always gets a toe-tap.

What’s your biggest achievement – career or otherwise?

Whilst I’m pleased with where my career has taken me so far, it has to be my son. He’s currently 14 months old and amazes me in some way every single day. His determination, zest for life and desire to learn are really quite inspiring.

What is your ideal holiday?

Anywhere so long as it has sun, serenity, wine, a pretty beach, a good book and great restaurants.
