Ri5 profile: Danny Heath

Danny Heath was recently appointed senior agency sales manager at News UK, where he looks after its print portfolio, The Times and The Sunday Times Appointments job board, The Sun Employment job board and Milkround.

How did you first get into the sector?

A friend of mine had just started working for a recruitment consultancy and had arranged a group interview with a new client. The night before, two people dropped out so he asked me to go and make up the numbers so he didn’t look bad - turns out he was the one doing me a favour!

What was your first recruitment-related job?

Selling recruitment advertising in Computing magazine. I joined about three months before the recession - tough start!

Accident or design?

Accident. I don’t think anyone knows our industry exists outside of it, they certainly don’t understand the importance of it.

Would you do the same again?

What would you do if you didn’t do this?

I have no idea, however I imagine Abercrombie & Fitch would be knocking on my door to work in-store…!

Proudest achievements

Professional – The opportunity to work in New York was huge and something I’m very lucky to have had the opportunity to do.

Personal – Being asked to be best man. It was great for me, awful for the groom.

Top professional influence?

A few people have had a big influence on how I look to carry myself and deliver in the job. Jon Cooney was my first manager at Incisive and certainly gave me a steer on the dos and dont’s of recruitment advertising.

I also owe a lot to Simon Devitt for his explanations of the importance of digital and helping me gain the best possible understanding of it. Finally Jeremy Roberts, someone who helped me greatly, although I find it hard to fully trust someone with such a terrible hat collection.

Favourite industry colleague and why?

I’ll refrain from mentioning any clients as obviously I like them all equally! But from the media side a big shout out to Adrian McSwiggan and Big Ren – on, and Gabbi Lee I suppose!

Why we love social media?

Companies can show their personality, such an important part of any EVP project but one that isn’t done well enough a lot of the time.

Why we hate social media?

It encourages the ‘quantity not quality’ approach that companies should try to avoid.

Favourite recruitment ad?

An ad booked by TMP (I think it was a local government client) in my first month on Computing, on the last day of the month, which took me over target for the first time.

Favourite non-recruitment ad?

I love the new ‘I kissed’ ads from Coca Cola, also the Economist’s ‘two sides’ campaign are fantastic marketing.

Favourite piece of music/album?

Jay Z – Reasonable doubt

Perfect weekend?

Anfield with the wonderful Armen Lloyd, Dinner with my girlfriend and a night out with the boys.

Favourite restaurant for:

  • Business – Berners St Tavern
  • Enjoying with friends – Pub grub
  • Romance –  Rosa’s Thai in Soho
  • Eating – Bodeans

Something or someone for Room 101?

Russell Brand

Favourite sport (participant)?

Favourite sport (spectator)?
