Ri5 Profile: Ben Nunn

As Christmas fast approaches we offer you an early gift in the form of an entertaining profile from ThirtyThree's Head of Digital, Ben Nunn

How did you first get into the industry?

I ran the sits vac section at the Hemel Hempstead Gazette and Herald Express, and was approached by one of my agencies – International Advertising, in Rickmansworth, and the rest is history.

Would you do the same again?

I still really enjoy what I do, so probably, yes.

What would you do if you didn’t do this?

I’d love to work in Formula 1

Who are your favourite people from the industry?

There are so many lovely people I’ve been lucky to work with over the years…, it would be unfair to single any individuals out.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

Sleep on that thought.

And what piece of advice would you give somebody starting out in the sector?

Put your hand up to learn new things – it makes work so much more interesting, and you might surprise yourself

What’s your favourite recruitment ad?

The McDonald’s franchising campaign

And what’s your favourite non-recruitment ad?

Any John Smith’s ad with Peter Kay in it. ‘Ave it.

You’re entertaining industry contacts. Where do you take them, and why?

Scotti’s café, Clerkenwell Green – breakfast - because it’s a unique experience.

Dirty Tricks: Inside Story of British Airways’ Secret War Against Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic

And what are you listening to?

You got the love – Candi Staton

Which five guests would you invite to your ideal dinner party?

My lovely wife (obvs), Ayrton Senna, Murray Walker, Will Ferrell and Steve Carell

What are your top three films?

Cannonball Run, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation & Caddyshack

Something or someone for Room 101?

TOWIE/Made in Chelsea

What item do you never leave home without?

My phone

What’s your biggest achievement – career or otherwise?

Careerwise, I’d say leading the team that won ‘best website’ at the RADs three years in a row, and on a personal perspective, my family – hands’ down.

Who’s your biggest hero, and why?

My wife. Why?  Just because.

What is your ideal holiday?

Anywhere sunny, with a pool, and my family.

Three words to describe yourself?

Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable

Your best and worst habits?

My best habit?  Fixing things.

Worst habit? Seeming to not know what is ever going on at the weekend, despite being told repeatedly, and often being involved in the planning in the first place.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Viennese Whirls

What has been your worst/most boring job you’ve ever had?

Working commission-only for a company selling advertising space in local round table newsletter magazines – a room full of smoke, with only a stack of yellow pages, a phone and a fax.  But it was this job that got me my job at the local paper…

What single fact would surprise people the most about you?

I’m quite handy at metalwork/making wrought Iron furniture
