Ri Fiver result: submarine magic hits the heights

The latest Ri Fiver competition attracted a small number of high quality entries.

Tonic Agency’s film to promote Talent Bank’s recruiting work for the utilities sector at the annual energy conference in October (plus supporting materials) made an impression on the jury and attracted votes.

And Feather Brooksbank’s multi-media employer brand development and recruitment communications work for Morrisons attracted attention and votes too.

But this month, Alexander Mann Solutions’ film for BAE Systems to recruit a wide range of engineering specialists to work on new Royal Navy submarines hit the jackpot and won the Ri Fiver by a decisive margin.

Here is a selection of the comments from the jury: from freelance writer Andy Rigden: “An ambitious idea, lovingly executed.” From ThirtyThree creative director, Gavin Anderson: “Moody, well executed and perfectly targeted. Stood out by a mile.”  From SMRS creative director, Matthew Sinclair:  “It’s a beautiful piece of work … its simplicity, authenticity and high production values cannot be overlooked.  A worthy winner for me.”  And from Matthew’s colleague at SMRS, head of copy Marie Morton: “LOVE IT! From the dramatic opening, where the sub nearly collides with the camera, to the dramatic reveal, as layer after layer of engineering excellence peels away and is pared down to the single bolt. It excites. It keeps your attention and it’s perfect for the target audience.”  There were other supporters too, including freelance art directors Danny Buttarazzi and Rob Walker, writer Phil Woodford, and creative directors Jim Landen (Bernard Hodes), Mike Tamlyn (Wave), and Chris Bennett (DNA).

So a good competition and a worthy winner – perfect for the penultimate Ri Fiver of 2012.  Congratulations to AMS and BAE Systems who win the Ri Fiver for September/October; commiserations to Tonic Agency and Feather Brooksbank; and thanks to all who entered.

There will be one more chance for glory this year, and one more chance to get in the mix for the Ri High Fiver 2012.  (Just to remind you, the jury will gather early in the new year to discuss all the 2012 winners, and select the victor ludorum, in front of an audience of the industry’s finest.  Details to be announced shortly.)  Deadline for the Ri Fiver for November/December will be Monday 7th January 2013 at midnight.

''I thought the Morrisons campaign was really good and would have got my vote! Let's hope we see something from them entered for the Graduate Recruitment Social Media Awards, as I would think they would do well, and maybe even go one step further and win!

If only all these creatives weren't so busy judging the Ri5er, maybe they could find time to enter it.

Good point Mr Anonymous, but now the Ri Fivers are finished for the year, they have until the 7th December to get their submissions in for these awards! I'd like to thank Ri5 (one of the sponsors of this event) for not having a December Ri Fiver, just for that reason. ;-)

Nice plug Mike!

The Ri Fivers finished? How dare you! The final Fiver will be for November and December, and the winner will be a contender for the Ri High Fiver 2012, the ultimate creative prize in recruitment communications.

Phil Woodford Date: Nov 30, 2012

Judging the Fivers is the only creative work I get these days. It's called the Fiver, incidentally, as each judge is on a £5k annual retainer.
