Half of firms have hired apprentices in the past five years

Almost half of UK businesses have taken on apprentices in the past five years, highlighting the key role apprenticeships play in helping young people take their first career steps.

This is according to the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), which also found over three-quarters of people think more young people will choose alternative routes into employment, such as apprenticeships, over the next five years.

In addition, almost two-thirds of firms believe this will affect the way they recruit in future.

Meanwhile, almost a third of employers who responded to the AAT’s survey said they will increasingly take apprenticeships into consideration when recruiting, and a further one in five said they will attach less importance to degrees in their hiring policy.

Over half of employers who have taken on candidates with apprenticeships said those recruits have generally better than those with a university degree.

Mark Farrar, AAT chief executive, said: “Our research into the apprenticeship landscape found that many young people are seriously considering apprenticeships as a way of gaining skills to enter their chosen profession, and therefore it is very encouraging to see that UK businesses are thinking along the same lines when it comes to recruitment.

“Our research shows that there are thousands of UK firms who want or will consider apprentices as part of their workforce, and this figure is only going to grow.  This presents real opportunities for individuals to get on the career ladder, climb to success quickly and gain the skills necessary for landing their dream job.’’
