End of an era at The Guardian

After an amazing partnership and a combined tenure of nearly 49 years  - Tony Bowley and Helen Bird are passing on the baton of Guardian Jobs.

Their time there has seen them lead the recruitment market, win some of the most prestigious awards in the industry, spearhead the transition from print to digital and constantly iterate and change the offering to their clients and agencies.

Together they have reframed the shape and structure of the department many times and have introduced new ways of working to future proof their proposition. They have guided the business through recessions, snap elections and more recently the onset of Brexit.

As a result - they have ensured that The Guardian has a very profitable and thriving jobs business that contributes significantly to the GNM bottom line and plays a big role in ensuring Guardian journalism exists in perpetuity.

Tony told us: “The Guardian is an incredible organisation and brand. Leading a successful recruitment business is about first hiring the right people and then giving your talent the resources, support and the freedom to be as good as they can possibly be. Over our time here, The Guardian has allowed us to do this, and the results speak for themselves.”

Adding to this Helen commented:  "It has been the most incredible journey from beginning to end and I feel proud of the legacy we will leave behind. The Guardian Jobs team is an outstanding best in class business unit who build deep relationships of trust, work tirelessly on behalf of their clients and totally understand their issues and recruitment marketing needs. Tony and I have had a ball. It’s been hard work, but so rewarding, and we leave Guardian Jobs in great shape for the future. We are both really excited about the next chapter. Watch this space.”

Ri5 pass on their best wishes, and look forward to "What Helen and Tony did next ... "

So many good things one could say about Helen and Tony professionally, and their notable achievements are well known and documented. But for me, the qualities they share over and above this are what set them both apart. There are few people in the industry that I'd trust more, or whose company I enjoy more. It's been an absolute pleasure working with you both over the years and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
