Employment prospects: slightly better news

There may be few signs of employment ‘green shoots' at present, but HR organisations on both sides of the Atlantic have issued surveys suggesting that the worst may be behind us. A comparison between Labour Market Outlook surveys from the UK's Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the US's Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), suggests that, in Q2 2009, far fewer US employers expected to cut their workforces that in Q1 (17% compared to 39%).  If trends discerned previously are repeated, the UK will follow suit, lagging by approximately one calendar quarter.
